Hosam Elmussareh

Originally from Syria, a country in Western Asia bordering Lebanon and the Mediterranean Sea, Hosam Elmussareh moved to the UK in January 2009, initially settling in Scunthorpe where his brother already lived.

It is whilst living there that Hosam decided he wanted to further develop his English Language skills and after some research, he heard about the Grimsby Institute's first-rate reputation in delivering English teaching to speakers of other languages.

He said: "I had a very basic level of English when I first moved here so I wanted to better myself. It was whilst researching English courses that I came across the Grimsby Institute and its first rate reputation."

Hosam subsequently enrolled onto the IELTS English course and began his programme of study.

"Staff at the Institute have been so supportive and helpful. Throughout me initially thinking about what I wanted to do, to helping me get enrolled and started on the course, nothing was too much trouble."

Whilst living in Grimsby, Hosam has been staying with a homestay family. This is where students live within a traditional family home.

"The homestay family I am living with are lovely and it really helps you to understand the British culture and further develops your language skills."

Hosam has enjoyed his time so much at the Institute that he plans to start an MBA in Business and Administration from September.

"I've made so many friends at the Institute. There's so much to get involved with, which helps you to settle in and make friends. I especially enjoy playing badminton every week; I've made so many friends through doing this."
Hosam hopes to stay in the UK to pursue a career upon completing his studies.

Owen Kumirayi came to the Grimsby Institute all the way from Zimbabwe after hearing about the Institute’s first-rate reputation in offering Engineering training.

"After researching various colleges and universities, The Institute came out by far the best so I wanted to be a part of it." He said. He enrolled onto the Foundation Diploma in Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Engineering after speaking to advisors at the Institute.
"The international staff were extremely helpful and supported me every step of the way, from my initial application to arriving on campus."

He moved to the area in August 2009 and began living at one of the Institute's several student halls of residence - Scartho Hall.
He said: "The Halls are a great place to make new friends. Scartho Hall, where I stay has great facilities and is situated within a lovely area. Students from all over the world live within the same halls and it's great to mix with different people and learn about different cultures."

Moving from another country can be very daunting but I've made lots of new friends here and there's always lots of events and activities going on, which really help you to settle in."

Owen hopes to pursue further study upon completing his Engineering course.

Rohit Khullar

Rohit Khullar began his studies at the Institute in September 2008 to complete the MSc in Productivity and Innovation programme.

Along with 6 other students travelling from India, this group formed the pilot year for the course however, even in its opening year it still managed to attract some of the brightest graduates from across Europe and Asia.
"I came to the Institute because of its outstanding reputation and I was really impressed by what the MSc programme had to offer," Rohit said.

"This programme is so unique & original, I knew it'd be the right course for me."

Rohit graduated in the Autumn of 2009 and was awarded the 'Divisional prize for outstanding performance throughout his studies.' He has subsequently gone onto a job in Leeds, working as a graduate assistant.

"Life in Grimsby has been completely different from what I was used to living in India but I have enjoyed my stay here. It was my first opportunity to be independent and really learn about a different culture."

After a highly successful pilot year, the MSc programme has taken on a new look for 2010 with a range of elective modules.

"The MSc course is business related so it really sets you up for a successful career. You work on various practical projects, which are invaluable learning experience.

"Grimsby is a lovely, peaceful town, which makes it easy to get on with your studies. I made some great friends here and will take away some lovely memories."
