Workbased Apprenticeships

All types of businesses benefit from  apprenticeships. No matter what size your organisation, if you employ young people, you could almost certainly benefit from an apprenticeship of some kind.

What is WorkBased Learning?
Workbased Learning is part of a national programme raising the skill levels of young people. It provides support for young people to work towards the achievement of National Vocational Qualifications (NVQs). Over 100,000 employers are currently developing their employees in this way, ranging from small employers who employ less than five staff to household names.

How does it work?
Apprentices are looking for a challenging and rewarding career, and working with your organisation can help them do just that. Advanced apprentices have to be employed and their training programme usually lasts for approximately three years. Apprentices are usually employed but they can start on a training placement and receive a training allowance for an agreed initial period.

Why should our organisation take an apprentice?
More competent, better-trained people improve your productivity. That makes your organisation more competitive.

The Grimsby Institute of Further & Higher Education offers training and support to both apprentices and employers by:

  • Identifying suitable employees and work placement opportunities
  • Identifying existing employees who may benefit from training
  • Planning and designing training programmes to meet your needs and those of the individual
  • Providing off-the-job training, to support the learning which is taking place in the workplace
  • Monitoring learner progress and providing help and support where necessary
  • Assessing leaner competence in the workplace
  • Working with the national awarding bodies such as City and Guilds, to award nationally recognised qualifications (NVQs) to learners
  • Providing on-going support and training to you and your staff in all aspects of the above
