The rest of the cold chain, storage, transport, retail and catering are even bigger users. There is, therefore, a substantial economic and environmental need to significantly improve food refrigeration efficiency.
To help meet this need Defra (the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs) have funded a 3 year £1m plus project 'Fostering the Development of Technologies and Practices to Reduce the Energy Inputs into the Refrigeration of Food'.
Its objective is to reduce refrigeration energy without compromising food safety and quality. In the project the Food Refrigeration and Process Engineering Research Centre (FRPERC) at the University of Bristol was partnered by Brunel, London South Bank and Sunderland Universities. FRPERC has now transferred its activities to The Grimsby Institute where it will maintain and update this website with the aid of its partners. The research programme concentrated on three topics:
- Mapping of energy use in different parts of the chain
- Identifying the most promising technologies, systems and business practices
- Undertaking feasibility studies on the most promising technologies
