Introductory - Certificate in Hedge Laying
Duration: Part time, Saturday (10am-3pm).
5 hours per week, for 2 weeks.
This course is suitable for anyone wishing to develop practical skills and knowledge in the craft of hedge laying. It is suitable for anyone who has a keen interest in the natural environment and conservation. You will learn how to identify native hedge species and apply the practical techniques in order to restore and manage hedgerows including tool use and identification. As this is a practical course you will be involved in a high proportion of physical activity.
This course is based at the Lincolnshire Rural Activities Centre, Louth.
Entry Requirements
There is no formal qualification; you will gain an Institute Certificate.Essential equipment to include; tough full length trousers (i.e., jeans), tough long sleeve top, tough boots, ideally steel toe cap boots (no trainers or open toe shoes), waterproof coat. Safety clothing must be worn for this course due to the sharp nature of tools and hedging material. Safety gloves will be provided.
Lunch is not provided (Pack up and drink suggested).

The Institute certificate will be awarded after 2 weeks of theory and practical which will cover:Origin/ history of hedgerows
Identification of native species
Restoring and managing hedgerows
Health and safety
Tool identification and safe application
Practical hedge laying techniques
A hands on approach to managing hedges
What next?
Learners have the opportunity to progress onto part time and full time horticultural courses such as the RHS Level 2 Certificate in Horticulture.This is ideal for anyone wishing to develop their knowledge of native hedgerow species and practical restoration techniques. It is aimed at community groups as well as individuals who have a keen interest in environmental and conservation issues.
How is the course assessed?
The tutor is the assessor and there is no formal exam.Which campus?
